Practice What You’ve Been Neglecting

Do you have something in your life that you’re supposed to regularly practice? Maybe an instrument, a sport, a skill…

Have you been maintaining a regular practice routine?

If you haven’t, don’t worry – me too. It can be difficult to find the time, energy, or discipline to keep up with the practice you’re supposed to do.

Let today be a day you practice again. If you’re struggling to find space to give your practice a real chance, why not find something you can do to practice now?

Through muscle memory and imagination, float your limbs through the motions of the practice. 

If you play piano, tap your fingers on the table before you in the order of a song you’ve memorized. In fact, see how much of the song you’re currently learning you remember. If you’re a soccer player, position your feet under your chair to match the correct form of a kick. Juggle an invisible ball between your feet the next time you get up to refill your water bottle.

 Visualize yourself doing it, and as much as you are able in your space right now – move through the motions of the practice. 

Sure, it’s not a complete practice, and it’s not a replacement for the dedicated time and space needed to accomplish a complete practice, but it’s something. It’s something you don’t have to set aside time for, and with any hope, it will motivate you to create space for the real thing.

What’s the harm in doing what you can right now? At the very least, it may relieve you from the guilt of having done nothing when you ready yourself to sleep tonight. 

It’s ordinary to avoid or neglect practice. Try this, and see if it helps to break from the ordinary.

    For me, learning Guitar, ya not doing it so well, needs time I don’t seem to have. Then learning German so I can talk with Brigitte’s parents without a translator, more important, still lacking… LOL………
