Do What You Can Today
What did you tell yourself yesterday that you would do today? Did you promise too much? Do you feel overwhelmed by it, and perhaps – is it burdening you from starting?
That’s okay. We’re often far too ambitious when we don’t have to do something right now. It’s easy to pile too much on when we don’t have to get to it until later.
Cut your promises down by half. The version of you yesterday wasn’t careful in considering where you would be today. Maybe you’re more fatigued than you anticipated you would be today, maybe your feelings or today’s experiences have been obstacles that stand in the way of your to-do list. It happens, it’s alright.
Cut your promises down by half, and allow yourself a fair chance of finding accomplishment by the day’s end.
Consider what motivates you to be most efficient with your time. Are you likely to do what’s easiest, what’s the most difficult to get started or to finish, what excites you the most? Choose what to eliminate from yesterday’s list and how to order what remains on that list by those factors. Create a plan for yourself that is the most likely to be foolproof; create your ability to finish the list.
If you’re worried about getting distracted, bored, or tired, have plans in place to help you continue on. Maybe you’ll find value in allowing yourself short breaks when your mind starts to wander or doze, you can set short-timers – maybe 10 or 15 minutes – and use those moments to be mindless for a short while. Play a mobile game, watch a YouTube video, scroll through Facebook… When the timer goes off, reset your focus and continue with your task. Maybe movement can maintain your engagement. Perhaps when you find yourself wandering away from the task at hand, you may find your way back to it if you take a moment to stand, stretch, or be mindful of your posture.
Today, permit yourself to cut yesterday’s promises down by half. Enjoy the sense of accomplishment tonight. This evening, maybe you will create an outline for what tomorrow may look like, but maybe, you should create tomorrow’s plan… tomorrow.
