Today, I would like for you to challenge an opinion you stand rigidly in. Whether it be personal, political, religious, or social, I want you to choose a belief or a value you hold firmly, and I want you to play the devil’s advocate, and debate yourself on whatever it may be.

You can choose to research the opposing perspective or carry through the rabbit hole of thoughts of your own accord. The challenge is to make yourself feel and understand completely the other side of the coin. Make yourself believe that the opinion you carry is the opposite of what rings true for you. Allow yourself to resonate and empathize with the opposite opinion and see if you can find the root of the reason why such an opinion exists so prominently. If you have the strength, see if you can convince yourself to believe entirely differently – even if just for a few short moments. Follow every avenue of thought and if you are able, think of someone you care about who carries that opposite opinion naturally and ask yourself – why do they feel this way?

Today’s challenge is a big one, and I hope you accept it. If you are successful, tell me – how much more intel did it provide you for the opinion you already carry? Did it help solidify your opinion further? Did understanding the other side make you feel any differently? How do you value that understanding now, and how does it feel to have a more complete picture? With more information, do you feel like you’re one step closer to a more universal and satisfying solution overall? Do you expect you will carry out this exercise again someday?
