Stretch Before Bed

I'll give you an easy one for Friday! The title says it all:

All I want from you today is for you to stretch before bed.

Easy Peasy!

When you’ve decided you’re ready to get ready for your slumber, take some time to dim the lights, and maybe put on soft music. Gently stretch every muscle in your body – one by one. 

Maybe you’ll start with your toes, then your feet, your ankles… 

Maybe you’ll prefer to start at the top. Perhaps a good neck stretch or shoulders would be best for you first. 

As you stretch, pay no mind to how long you hold each stretch. Allow your mind to wander wherever it likes to go… Maybe you’ll choose just to focus on the music that you’ve chosen to fill your space. Hold each stretch for as long as it feels good. If you notice your muscles are tense while you try to stretch, see if you can relax every muscle that is tense before you move on to the next. After your muscles are relaxed, see if you can pull your stretch just a tiny bit further… Maybe you’ll decide to stay in this stretch a little longer after all! 

Keep your breathing calm, slow, and deep. Be careful to ensure you don’t neglect a muscle as you travel your way through your body.  

If you start feeling frustrated, or you begin to notice your mind intrusively urging you to hurry along, relax the stretch you’re in for a moment, take a deep breath, find a thought you fancy, and slowly return to the stretch you felt frustrated in before. Don’t go so far that it hurts, after all – this is meant to feel relaxing and warm. 

Once you’ve stretched every muscle and once you’re ready to release from your last stretch, crawl into bed. Allow your blankets to wrap you in a hug and sink into your mattress. Notice whether crawling into bed tonight felt a little better than it does most days.
